Occupant or Inmate - Neville Goddard

Neville explains that we are always living in a certain state of consciousness. The problem is that we often keep returning to the same state without realizing that we can choose another one.

He says, "The state to which you most constantly return constitutes your dwelling place."

The falling backward technique;
Neville tells how William Blake taught him to fall backward with complete abandonment of self. The idea is to let go completely instead of trying to control the experience.

First, relax your body and close your eyes. Lie comfortably in bed and allow your mind to become quiet.

Before you begin, know where you want to go. Choose the state you want to experience. Don't start without knowing your destination.

Then imagine yourself falling backward into space. Let go of any resistance and surrender to the feeling. You don't need to force anything or make the experience happen.

As you imagine falling, enter the state you desire. If you want to feel secure, fall into the feeling of security. If you want to experience abundance, imagine yourself already living in that state, being loved and so on. The point is to experience it inwardly, not to keep wishing for it from a distance.

Remain in that state and allow it to become natural to you. Neville's instruction is to stay there rather than immediately returning to your old way of thinking.

You can also practise returning to your chosen state throughout the day, especially when you notice yourself slipping back into an unwanted one.

The meaning of "occupant or inmate" is simple: are you choosing the state in which you live, or do you feel trapped in it?
Neville teaches that we don't have to keep identifying with our present circumstances. We can choose a different state and learn to feel at home in it.

The important thing is not to struggle or force yourself to believe. Know where you are going, surrender, and remain in the state you have chosen until it feels natural.
